Ofcom changes to 0870 charging
Changes to 0870 call charges
Ofcom has recently announced regulatory changes to the way that calls to 0870 numbers are charged.
From 1st August 2009, 0870 numbers will be subject to a call delivery charge and will no longer provide revenue share payments.
What does this mean to you?
- Calls made to your 0870 numbers will be charged at lower pence per minute rates; however the level of pricing hasn't yet been announced by Ofcom.
- 0870 number owners will no longer receive revenue share payments from calls made to their number. Instead, number owners will pay pence per minute call delivery charges. Again, the level of pricing hasn't yet been announced by Ofcom.
What are your options?
o Keep the same number - The changes provide better clarity of pricing and protection for consumers and will be strictly enforced under Ofcom regulation. Therefore if you need to keep the same number, you will unfortunately have to pay the new call delivery charges. Callers will pay a lower charge which may encourage more calls into your business.
o Change your number - If you wish to maintain your revenue share payments, you will need to change your number to either a 0871/2/3 number or 0843/4.
What to do now
The major impact is on those businesses that own 0870 numbers if you have one of these then you should contact your current supplier or Utility Watch for best advice.
If you ring these numbers
We are confident you will see a reduction in the cost of calling these numbers though should you not see any reduction in the pence per minute rate then please contact Utility Watch for advice.
